Have you ever tried Hemp? No, not the "hemp" you might recall from college, but the one used as a nutritional supplement. If you haven't, I recommend trying it out.
When I was semi-vegan a few years ago, I purchased hemp powder as a supplement for my training regime. It's green in color and has a distinct nutty taste. One could describe it being similar to that of wheat grass or a green supplement.
Not only is hemp powder vegan friendly, it's also good for those who have specific diet requirements. Since I have thyroid issues, soy protein is off limits. Also, since whey is not particularly paleo friendly and causes bloating for some, hemp is great.
One serving of Hemp Powder contains 3 grams of fat, 15 grams of protein and only 1 gram of sugar.
Other benefits of Hemp include:
Highly digestible protein, used to repair tissue, grow muscles, and produce hormones, making it a good choice for post-workout shakes.
Contains beneficial amino acids to improve mood and brain function.
Hemp seeds are rich in important minerals like magnesium, iron and manganese. Magnesium is important in the metabolism of fat and carbohydrates. Its also used by the body for growth and repair of tissues, contraction and relaxation of your muscles. Iron is used to d transport oxygen to blood in different parts of your body. Manganese is important for brain function, metabolism of energy, and regulation of thyroid gland.
There are so many combinations of fruits you can use to make your own smoothie, some of my favorite include berries, banana-chocolate, pineapple-coconut, strawberry banana. I created this simple recipe by combining ingredients I had on hand.
Put all the ingredients in your blender and mix on high for about 1-2 minutes to ensure ice is completely crushed.
